History

The Pittsburgh Chapter of Open Doors for the Handicapped of Pennsylvania, founded by John and Eileen Shackelton, was established in the 1950s and incorporated in 1957. It is a non-profit organization founded "to promote opportunities for maximum independence of the physically handicapped in all aspects of daily living." The organization has been instrumental in assisting handicapped people with finding suitable housing, using public transportation, and making buildings and sidewalks accessible to those with physical challenges.
