Biography
Francis C. Shane of Braddock, Pennsylvania, served as corporal in the medical department of the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, Shane represented salaried workers of USWA District 15. He was Executive Secretary of the United Steelworkers of America's (USWA) Committee on Civil Rights from its inception in 1947 to 1966. During that time he was responsible for the union's official position on civil rights matters in contracts and public statements, often representing the USWA at major demonstrations. Shane served as secretary at the 1951 Seminar on Human Relations sponsored by the USWA and as co-chair of the National Conference for Human Rights in 1958.

Scope and Content Notes
This collection contains information regarding the work of the United Steelworkers' Committee on Civil Rights, where Francis C. Shane served as Executive Secretary. Included are meeting minutes, correspondence, and clippings on the committee's work. Also present are recordings about the history of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO). Material from Shane's experience training for the medical department of the United States Army during World War II includes tests, study sheets, and certificates. Photographs from civil rights demonstrations and USWA events are also present, as well as signed photographs of USW presidents Philip Murray, David J. McDonald, and I.W. Abel.
