First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sharpsburg, Pa., was founded in 1863 by former members of the Evangelical United Congregation of Etna, Pa. The church, which served mostly German-Americans and used German as its official language until 1920, was originally located on Clay Street in Sharpsburg moving to its present location on Sixth Street, Sharpsburg, in 1889.
The records of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Sharpsburg, Pa., consist of 2 Reels. Reel 1 includes three Record Books - 1863-1906 (in German); 1906-1946 (partially in German); and 1947-1989. The books list baptisms, confirmations, communicants, marriages, and deaths. The 1947-1989 record book also gives the church's constitution and by-laws; and programs from their 50th anniversary (1913 written in German) and their 100th anniversary (1963) both containing a history of the church. Reel 2 consists of an English transcription of the the Record Book 1863-1906.
