History

The Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Montefiore Lodge, #794, was established in 1890 in the Hill District, a neighborhood in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Membership to #794 was mostly Jewish. As a subordinate lodge to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Montefiore Lodge followed many of the guiding principles as set out by the Grand Lodge of Pennsylvania. These included "the creation and disbursement of a fund for the benefit and relief of its members in sickness or distress, the assistance of their wives, widows and orphans, the burial of its members and their wives, and the maintenance and support of the Homes established by the Order."

Scope and Content Notes

The Records of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Montefiore Lodge, #794, contains minutes, dues ledger, membership lists, correspondence, legal papers, guides to ceremonies, and publications for the period 1920-1962. The bulk of the materials directly relate to the Montefiore Lodge. However some materials relate to other lodges and the Grand Lodge.
