Emanuel United Methodist Church is the result of the union of two longstanding area churches. One branch extends to the Emanuel-Ark Church of the Evangelical Association of West Pittsburgh, founded in 1875. In 1882 they moved from their original site at 137 Steuben Street (then Chestnut Street) to 217 Steuben Street. In 1912 they moved to their present location on Lorenz Avenue. In 1946 they changed their name to Lorenz Avenue Evangelical United Brethren Church and again in 1968 to the Lorenz Avenue United Methodist Church.
The other branch of Emanuel had its origins in a tent on Oakmont Street in 1901. Soon after the Wesley Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church of West Pittsburgh was built and the first services were held on Christmas 1902. In 1924 a new building was constructed on Stratmore Street and was named the Crafton Heights Methodist Episcopal Church. They became United Methodist in 1968. On September 25, 1978 a fire destroyed the building and the congregation worshipped in the Crafton Heights Presbyterian Church. Later the congregation joined the Lorenz Avenue congregation for worship.
On January 1, 1982 the former Crafton Heights and Lorenz Avenue United Methodist Churches merged to become Emanuel United Methodist Church.
The Microfilmed Records of Emanuel United Methodist Church include six volumes of registers containing lists of members, baptisms, marriages, and deaths; 75th Anniversary booklet; 1983 church directory; and photographs for the years 1875-1986. Part of volume 1 is in German.
