History
The Polish Falcons of America was founded in 1887 in Chicago, and was first chartered in 1894 in Illinois as the "Alliance of Polish Turners of the United States of America." In 1914, through amendments to the charter, the corporation became the "Polish Falcons Alliance of America" and in 1924, was incorporated in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as the "Polish Falcons of America." The purpose of the organization is to promote physical, mental, and cultural welfare among its members. The headquarters were moved to Pittsburgh in 1912.
The official publication of the Polish Falcons is the Sokol Polski, which was started in 1896.
Scope and Content Notes
The records of the Polish Falcons consist primarily of minutes that span the years 1913-1980 with the majority of the records falling into the years 1940-1980. The early records are in Polish, the later years in both Polish and English. The records include: minutes, Board of Directors (Polish), 1913-June 1969; minutes, Board of Directors (English), May 1947-December 1980; minutes, Convention, 1940-1968; minutes, Polish Falcons Alliance, July 1969-December 1980.
The Polish Falcons of America are concerned with the business aspects of the organization and the Polish Falcons Alliance are concerned with the fraternal activities of the organization.
