Joan Miller was a doctoral student in the history department at the University of Pittsburgh. She conducted her research in the 1970s. Her studies centered on the early urban development in the community of Hazelwood, Pennsylvania, in the mid to late nineteenth century.
The collection contains research conducted by Joan Miller as a student at the University of Pittsburgh. Her research includes census information, computer generated data lists and comparisons, notes and references to other articles, drafts, correspondence, and notes from other historical sources. The collection is arranged by series. Series I has financial information, series II contains citizenship information, series III deals with occupational information, series IV is a compilation of broad census information, series V holds information from secondary and other sources, series VI includes Miller's writing and correspondence, and series VII has Miller's computer research data and organization aids. Series VII also includes Miller's index card files. As much as possible, documents are arranged in chronological order.
