St. John's Lutheran Church of Highland Records, 1845-1973, AIS.1980.08, Archives & Special Collections, University of Pittsburgh Library System
St. John's Lutheran Church of the Highland is located in McCandless Township, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. Though the early history of St. John's is not complete, it is known that land was set aside in 1795 by local land owners for religious services. In 1804, four acres of land were demarcated for a church building and burial ground. Some time later a log church was built. The church was granted a charter in 1829 under the name The German Church of St. John in Allegheny County. In the 1850s the church was served by Presbyterian ministers and was known as the Cumberland Church. In 1860, the Lutheran church was revived and a frame structure was built. Some time after 1860, St. John's merged with Trinity Church and a new church structure was built. The present church building was built in 1952. A parsonage house on the grounds built chiefly by congregation members and dedicated in 1950 and a church school was dedicated in 1960 to house Sunday School classes.
The records include parish registers (infant and adult baptisms, communion register, confirmations, marriages, funerals, and historical events), minute books, cemetery account book, and miscellaneous documents for the years 1845-1973. Parish registers contain information concerning the lives of church members. Included within three volumes are infant baptisms (1860-1896 and 1908-1970), adult baptisms (1860-1888 and 1917-1969), communion register (1860-1900, 1908-1937, and 1954-1973), confirmations (1860-1898 and 1909-1970), marriages (1882-1896 and 1910-1970), funerals (1860-1893 and 1908-1970), and annual summaries (1949-1969). The minute books contain church Council and Congregation meeting minutes (1880-1903, 1904-1921, and 1939-1952). Additional miscellaneous documents contain historical information and church statistics.
