History

St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral was built in 1923, but the Greek Orthodox faithful has worshipped in temporary quarters since 1906. The three previous sites were the second floor of a building at 512 Court Place in Downtown Pittsburgh, a church building at 95 Fullerton Street, Uptown, and another second floor hall at 645 Sixth Avenue.

After a merger with Annunciation Church in September, 1918, it was agreed that worshipers would unite under the name "The Greek Community of Allegheny County-St Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church". The Church was founded to "set firm the foundations for future perpetuation of our faith and heritage by establishing Greek and Sunday schools for teaching Greek Orthodoxy and the Greek language."

St. Nicholas is the oldest and largest parish in the Sixth Archdiocesan District, and as it serves as the heart of Greek Orthodoxy in this area, it assumes a unique responsibility and duty to provide leadership in religious education, youth work, philanthropy, conferences and other worthwhile endeavors.

Scope and Content Notes

The St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral records span the years 1906-1976 with the greatest part of the collection from 1916-1953. The majority of the records are in Greek. The records include: baptismal, marriage, death; census; financial; regular Sunday Bulletins; Church Council Minutes; "Ecclesia" (monthly, bi-monthly) Magazine; charter, and by-laws; General Assembly attendance; Resolutions from 1951 General Assembly; and miscellaneous memorial publications.

Scope and Content Notes

This series contains the baptism records. In volumes 1-3 the records are alphabetically arranged according to the Greek alphabet. The given information includes: name (last name, Christian first name, Christian second name), date of birth, place of birth, place of baptism; parents record - father's name in full, place of birth, religion, address, mother's maiden name, place of birth, religion.; record of marriage - place of marriage/wedding town, church marriage, civil marriage, sponsor's name in full, address, memorandum, priest, witness. Treasurer's Record: date, receipt number, charge, cash received, balance due us. Volumes 4-6 include: date of birth, name of church, date of baptism, father's name, place of birth, mother's maiden name, place of birth, name of baptized, place of birth, residence, sponsors, priest, comments. These volumes are chronologically arranged in Greek. Volume 7 is the last in this series and includes: number in church year, number in Greek Community of Allegheny County; name, date of birth, date of baptism, father's name, place of birth, mother's maiden name, place of birth, sponsors, church, priest, comments. This volume is chronologically arranged in English and Greek. Scope and Content Notes

This series contains information regarding the death records and has two volumes. Volume 1 has an A-Z listing of death records for 1917-1962 and includes: number, date of death, permit number, date of internment, grave number, section number, division number, cause of death, physician; name in full, address, birth place, age, relatives (names, address), beneficiaries, did he or she have any insurance, undertaker (name, address), priest, witness, memorandum; Treasurer's Record - date, receipt number, charge, cash received, and balance due us. This volume is arranged alphabetically according to the Greek alphabet. Volume 2 contains: number, name, place of birth, age, marital status, residence, date of death, date of burial, place of internment, priest, relative, comments. This volume covers the deaths for November 18, 1942 to October 30, 1976 and is alphabetically arranged according to the Greek alphabet.

Scope and Content Notes

This series contains the original Charter for St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral which was created in 1906 and revised again in 1962. Also included are the Constitution and By-laws of the Greek Community of Pittsburgh that were established in 1945.
