Scope and Content Notes

The Luigia Clerici Papers span the years 1898-1899, and consists of handwritten notebooks and workbooks written in Italian, that relate to the instruction of female students between the ages of five and six, attending the Santa Viola Suburban Kindergarten for Girls located in Bologna, Italy.

The collection includes lesson plans, personal reflections as a teacher, observations on learning and instruction, curriculum details, a schedule, and workbooks that contain student entries.

The main notebook contains material related to the instruction of children. The curriculum is divided into the following categories: singing, gymnastics, memory exercises, manual work, womanly work, drawing, reading and writing, handwriting, math, and moral education.

Additional notebooks contain: a lesson plan organized by subject over a five-semester period, and a chart of daily routines by hour. Other items include workbooks of student entries in the practice of handwriting letters and numbers.

Although no background information is available regarding Luigia Clerici (beyond her status as a teacher), the information contained in this collection may reflect the methods, structure, and values toward education in Italy in the 1890s.
