Description
1936. Stalin holding a young girl from Asia. The occasion for the photograph was a meeting at the Kremlin, at which Party leaders and government officials received a delegation from the Buriat-Mongolian ASSR. Every member of the delegation received a gold watch, a gramophone, and a collection of records. The same presents were given to the seven-year-old Gelia Markizova, the daughter of the Second Secretary of the Buriat-Mongolian regional committee of the VKP (b), Ardan Markizov. The girl presented Stalin with a large bouquet of flowers. As early as December, 1937, Gelia's father was arrested and later shot, together with other leaders of the autonomous republic. Gelia's mother, Dominika Fedorovna Markizova, was arrested and, after a year's imprisonment, was sent to Southern Kazakhstan, where she died under mysterious circumstances in November, 1940. The girl who had been a symbol, before becoming the daughter of an "enemy of the people," was raised in Moscow by her aunt; she later changed her family name. Today, Engel'sina Ardanovna Cheshkova (Gelia Markizova), a mother of three, with an MA degree in history, is a member of the governing board of the "Memorial" society.
