Description
With Stalin's encouragement and a barrage of gifts and honors, Maksim Gor'kii (1868-1936) returned to Moscow from Italy in 1931 to become, in 1934, the first head of the newly constituted Union of Soviet Writers. Avel Enukidze served as Secretary of the Central Executive Committee from 1918 until he fell victim to the Purges in 1935.
