Description
Originally home of the School of Medicine, Pennsylvania Hall was one of four buildings completed as part of the original "Acropolis Plan" designed in the Greco-Roman style for the University by Palmer and Hornbostel. Ground broke for the building in 1909 and it was opened in 1911. If the plan had been completed, the campus would have wound its way around O' Hara Street. However, only State Hall, Thaw Hall, Pennsylvania Hall, and the Mineral Industries Building were completed as part of the plan. The Acropolis Plan was abandoned when focus was shifted to the construction of the Cathedral of Learning.
