Description
The purpose of the General Plan for the Reconstruction of Moscow (officially passed in July 1935) was to modernize Moscow, the capital of the triumphant socialist state. The plan included triumphal ways, new residential and public buildings, and parks. The centerpiece of the plan was the Palace of the Soviets, seen here in the poster towering over a redesigned skyline. The construction project (designed by the architects O. Iofan, O. Gelfreikh, V. Shchuko and sculptor S. Merkurov in 1934) was to be the tallest building in the world, complete with a 100 meter statue of Lenin. The building was never completed, however, the project served as an important symbol of triumphalism and frequently appeared in posters, paintings, films and other propaganda.
