Description
Gothic; The Chéron WindowDelaporte no. 42, Deremble-Manhes no. 15Panel 12. Chéron carries his severed headChéron, now a cephalophore, picks up his head and walks to the place where he wanted his church to be built. Chéron stands at center, haloed, holding his bearded head toward the right, and flanked by two angels (haloed, barefooted, multicolored wings). The angel to the left swings a censer, the one at right looks at him and gestures toward the right. Delaporte says the angel is leading him. On either side is a stylized tree. This episode is not in the life of Chéron. Many scholars think this is included to show that Chéron was like St. Denis, the patron of the Royal Abbey of St. Denis north of Paris. Manhes-Deremble points out that another section of this window also shows Chéron’s importance vis-à-vis other saints; panels 17-20 show Chéron curing a prince on the way to the shrine of St. Martin at Tours.; The Chéron Window
