Description
Jamb Figure; Gothic; North Porch, Left Portal (Incarnation Portal)Right Jambs- Visitation (Mary and Elizabeth-Luke 1:39-56) and DanielIn the Visitation, Mary and her kinswoman Elizabeth (mother of John the Baptist), meet to rejoice in their pregnancies. (Luke 1:39-56) . It is curious that the face of Elizabeth (right) appears to be younger than that of the Virgin (left), since in the gospels Mary is much younger than Elizabeth. However, the identities of the figures are quite firm, since the socle of the figure on the left has the burning bush, a traditional symbol of Mary's virginity.Daniel is an Old Testament prophet, author of the Book of Daniel, who foretold the Incarnation. Kidson points out that unlike other, earlier jamb statues at Chartres, the figures in the Visitation are interacting with one another. (Kidson, p. 49).; North Porch, Left Portal (Incarnation Portal)
