Description
Samuel Black McCormick served as Chancellor of the Western University of Pennsylvania from 1904 until 1921. He oversaw the name change in 1908 and the subsequent move of the University to the Oakland neighborhood and Pittsburgh's Civic Center from Observatory Hill. Under his administration, the University gained recognition and prestige through its athletics programs. This led to academic growth and physical expansion of the campus. McCormick was part of a "Betterment Committee" that raised funds to develop the campus according to the Acropolis Plan of architects Hornbostel and Palmer.
