Description
Ohio Asylum for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb in Columbus, Ohio. Construction began in 1864 with the building opening in 1868. The school encompassed several buildings but by 1941 the main building had fallen into disrepair, though still in use. In 1953 the school relocated to its current site and is known as the Ohio School for the Deaf. Originally, the school provided vocational training in areas such as cooking, sewing, and bookbinding. It was alternatively known as the Ohio Deaf and Dumb Asylum, Ohio State School for the Deaf, and the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb. The main building was destroyed by fire in 1981 while another building on the campus serves as the Cristo Rey Columbus High School.
