Description
John T., describes his early life in Hanford, Virginia, detailing the challenging living conditions of a log house with no windows, where his family cooked on the fireplace. His father, a farmer, also worked as a mail carrier, though he couldn't read or write. John T. had six siblings, and only he and one brother survived into adulthood. The conversation covers John T.'s limited education, his family's struggles, and his decision to leave home to earn money. He worked various jobs, including in a bank, a tobacco factory, and a wagon factory. John T. emphasizes the importance of education, sharing his own pursuit of learning and his experience as a self-taught preacher. He moved to Pittsburgh in 1924, working at Westinghouse, and became involved in preaching and community service.
