Description
Chess records the daily activities of his trip to Europe, starting with his sailing across the Atlantic. Chess typically only gives brief and nondescript notes of where he’s visited and who he’s seen, with more detailed description offered of the commodities available for sale (especially textiles) and the crops and animals on farms. He often gives estimates of crowd sizes when observing large gatherings. He briefly notes the weather each day. Chess travels by train during much of his trip and offers some observations of land viewed in passing. He travels to Belfast, Dundonald, Newtownards, and Comber and discusses some “superstitions” of the local Irish. From Belfast, he travels to Londonderry, Enniskillen, Pettigo, and other places in County Donegal and County Fermanagh. He takes note of extreme poverty in Bellyshannon. Chess then travels to London and visits typical tourist destinations—Westminster Abbey, the House of Lords, Buckingham Palace—with some account of costs expended along the way and observations of goods and their prices. Next, Chess visits Paris for the Exposition Universelle, the second World’s Fair in Paris. He reflects on different nationalities’ perspectives and complains about the high prices and lack of the English speakers in Paris. From Paris, Chess travels to Geneva and Berne. He travels the Brunig pass and visits Basel, St. Louis France, and Strasbourg. Back in Paris, Chess recounts seeing Emperor Napoleon with the Ottoman Sultan. He leaves Paris for London and travels through England, including Manchester. He passes through Stranraer, Scotland, then Dumfries and Glasgow. On August 1, he travels to Sterling and arrives in Dublin on August 3 before heading to Killarney. While in Cork on August 6, he visits a poor house, recording that it has 4200 inmates. On August 8, he sets out from Queenstown (modern Cobh) back home across the Atlantic, getting back to Allegheny County on August 25.
