Description
Summary of the play: On the seventh day of the seventh month, the day of the Festival of the Weaver, a priest of the Sekidera Temple goes with some other priests and a child studying at the temple to hear an old lady talk of poetry, about which she is very knowledgeable. As they listen to her words, they realize that she is none other than the poetess and famous beauty of old, Ono no Komachi. Quoting her own poems, she paints for them a picture of her former splendor and grieves over her present wretchedness. Then, at the suggestion of the child, she accompanies them to the temple for the festival. There, after the child has danced for them, she too performs a dance, but when dawn arrives she returns alone to her little hut. ©P.G. O’Neill, A guide to nō. Hinoki Shoten, 1964.
