Description
This early postcard highlights the entrance to the Oakmont Country Club. Henry C. Fownes, a steel manufacturer in Pittsburgh, got together with friends and family to organize the Oakmont Country Club. In 1903, the Lee heirs sold 180 acres of the White Oak Levels to the Oakmont Land Company. That land, along with another ten acres, ultimately became the Oakmont Country Club. The Country Club is located on Hulton Road. The club took two years to complete. The Oakmont Country Club has hosted a large number of golf championships: seven U.S. Opens, five U.S. amateurs, three PGA championships, and one U.S. Woman's Open. Oakmont Country Club's golf course was where Johnny Miller achieved a final round score of 63 in the 1973 U.S. Open, which has been called "the greatest round of the 20th century." The club was dedicated as a historic landmark by former President Gerald Ford.
