Description
Sara Boyle, director of the Oakmont Carnegie Library from 1925 until 1968, is seen here working at the main desk in 1945. She holds a book, Inside the F.B.I.,and appears to be discussing it with a patron. It looks as though two other librarians are at work, one of whom is on the phone. A number of teen boys surround the desk, ready to check out books or ask questions of the librarians. A poster on the wall of the library asks for people to "give war bonds." Andrew Carnegie donated money for the building of a library in Oakmont at the request of his cousin, Leander M. Morris, who lived in Oakmont. Carnegie ended up giving $25,000 to the establishment of the library. William Braithwait worked as the contractor for the library; the building cost $17,956 to build. Oakmont Carnegie Library opened in 1901. The initial collection consisted of 2,603 books, purchased using some of the money from Carnegie's donation and the rest from the Oakmont School Board. The library was renovated and expended in 2005, and has become a vibrant community center for the citizens of Oakmont and surrounding areas.
