Description
St. Thomas Episcopal Church was originally built in 1874, after Jacob Paul and his family had felt the need for a new church to serve Oakmont. The original church was built for $5,700 on land at the corner of Delaware Avenue and Second Street. In 1895, the parish built a 'chapel' across the street that later served as St. Irenaeus Church as well as the Oakmont Women's Club. In 1897, land was donated at the corner of Delaware and Fourth Street by Harry Armstrong and his wife. The new stone church pictured here was consecrated on October 27, 1907, with the Reverend Dr. Laurens MacLure serving. Jacob Paul has paid the entire cost of building the new church, $74,000, in memory of his recently deceased wife. Hence, after 1907 the church was called St. Thomas Memorial Episcopal Church, though now the Memorial is often dropped from the name. The church is located at 378 Delaware Avenue, and their website is www.st-tom.org. The image shows the ornate pulpit. Originally from the collection of Edith McCafferty.
