View of railroad cars full of coal. The coal industry in Cambria County grew gradually through the 1800s. In 1885, the county was home to almost two dozen mines; by 1901, that number had grown to 130. Through the 1910s and 1920s, the Cambria County coal mines produced roughly 16 million tons of coal annually. The coal industry played an important role in the region's economy until the 1980s.
