Joseph H. Larwill was born at Chesterton, England, in 1784, and was nine years of age when he came to the United States with his parents and settled first in Philadelphia and later in Pittsburgh, Pa. He studied surveying at The Pittsburgh Academy, a predecessor of the University of Pittsburgh, for at least the time period 1801-1803. Larwill was appointed in 1804 by Col. John Beyer of the United States Land office to survey by sections the lands of Wayne, Stark, and Columbiana counties in Ohio. From 1806 until 1808, Larwill was one of the proprietors of the site of Wooster and of Mansfield in Richland County. In 1810 he was appointed by the General Assembly as commissioner for laying, opening and making public the road from Canton, Ohio, west through Stark and Wayne counties to Mansfield. The following year he was appointed by Hon. William Eustic, Secretary of War, as first lieutenant of artillery in the U.S. Army. He took part in the War of 1812 and drew the original map of Fort Meigs.
In 1817 Larwill married Nancy Quinby, the daughter of Ephriam Quinby. They settled in Wooster, Ohio, in 1814. Larwill served as senator from Wayne and Holmes counties (Ohio) in 1826. He and his brothers were prominent in Ohio politics for many years. Larwill died in 1867 and is buried in Wooster, Ohio.

This notebook belonged to Joseph H. Larwill, presumably while he was a student at The Pittsburgh Academy. It contains several miscellaneous letters and numerous lessons on mathematics, including geometry, simple and compound interest, and fractions.
The Pittsburgh Academy was the predecessor of the University of Pittsburgh. This is the only manuscript in the University Archives from The Pittsburgh Academy period.
