Biography

W. Harry Archer was University Professor and Chair of the Department of Oral Surgery at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Archer received his graduate and undergraduate education at the Uinversity of Pittsburgh and joined the Dental School faculty in 1927. At that time the specialty of Oral Surgery was unknown and Dr. Archer pioneered its development and acceptance in the United States. He developed the first teaching relationship between dental school and hospital. He developed the first Masters program in oral surgery and supported the development of the first dental school department of anesthesia. He wrote two textbooks which were translated into 14 languages and served as the model for standard oral surgery.

His many honors include the Arnold K. Maislen Award from NYU and the Heidbrink Award from the American Society of Dental Anesthesiology. The School of Dental Medicine and the Dental Alumni Association honored Dr. Archer in 1968 with the dedication of the new Oral Surgery Clinic in his name and in 1975 with the presentation of a bronze bust in his image.

In addition to his extensive scientific writing, Dr. Archer wrote the definitive biography of Horace Wells, the man who is credited with bringing anesthesia to the United States.
