History

A fanzine defined, is "a non-professional and non-official publication produced by enthusiasts of a particular cultural phenomenon for the pleasure of others who share their interest." Fanzines were actually popularized within science fiction fandom before being adopted by other communities. Before the internet, fanzines provided people a vehicle to share thoughts, ideas, activities, art, and critique. The zines were often times produced at home, libraries, schools, and anywhere that allowed access to mimeograph machines and later, photocopiers. Science fiction and comic fanzines are a great resource for those interested in tracing the history of fandom and the subculture as a whole.

Scope and Content Notes

The Science Fiction and Comic Fanzine collection includes fanzines published primarily in the United States, including a considerable amount published locally and regionally and some of foreign origin. Contents of the fanzines include reviews, opinion, short fiction, letters, cartoons and drawings, and an exchange of information about science fiction conventions and fan interests.
