Abstract
The collection consists of letters concerning the illness of Addison and Joseph Stockton of cholera in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1832. Letters from Joseph before his death and from Addison following his illness, as well as from other friends and relatives of the Stockton family, are included. Reverend Joseph Stockton was born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, in 1779. From 1810 to 1820, Stockton was principal of the Pittsburgh Academy, the forerunner to the University of Pittsburgh. Biography

Reverend Joseph Stockton was born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, in 1779. He was ordained as a minister in June of 1801. He helped found the Presbyterian Church in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania. He was also involved with the Western Theological Seminary and Orphan Asylum, both in Allegheny City. From 1810 to 1820, Rev. Stockton was principal of the Pittsburgh Academy, a fore runner to the University of Pittsburgh. He died of cholera in Baltimore, Maryland, in October of 1832.

Scope and Content Notes

The collection consists of letters concerning the illness of Addison and Joseph Stockton of cholera in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1832. Letters from Joseph before his death and from Addison following his illness, as well as from other friends and relatives of the Stockton family, are included. Most of the letters concern Joseph's death and Addison's recovery. The letters are bound into the volume. A biography of Joseph is included on the inside of the back cover and a portrait of him is located on the first page of the letter book.

Gift to the Darlington Memorial Library in 1937.

Custodial History

This collection was located in the Darlington Memorial Library in the University's Cathedral of Learning until 2007 when it was moved to the ULS Archives Service Center for processing, storage, preservation and service. However, it remains in the custodianship of the ULS Special Collections Department.
