Biography

Templeton Smith, Jr. (1919-2007) was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa. He received three degrees from Harvard: an A.B. in History and Literature, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1940; an Industrial Administrator degree from the Graduate School of Business Administration (with Distinction) in 1943; and a J.D. from the Law School in 1947. After serving as an Officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Smith started his law career working for Rose, Eichenauer, Stewart and Rose as an Associate from 1948-1949. He then was hired as legal counsel for Koppers Company, Inc., a conglomerate which engineered and built coke ovens and steel mills, and manufactured a large variety of chemicals, road materials, plastics, and forest, tar and metal products. Smith primarily represented the company's environmental interests for the next 40 years. Shortly after the company was acquired by Keystone Environmental Resources, Inc. in 1988, Smith retired at age 70 in 1989. As a long-time resident of Mt. Lebanon, he devoted much of his time serving his community, such as the school board and zoning hearing board.

Smith devoted his retirement years to researching and writing books about his family history. In fact, he self-published seven titles based on his family history, which included, Isthmus: The Autobiography of Templeton Smith, One Who Made a Difference : Mrs. R. Templeton Smith, a.k.a. Eliza Kennedy Smith, 1889-1964 / By Her Son, Templeton Smith, Master of the Situation : Life and Letters of R. Templeton Smith and the Ancestors Who Made Him, 1755-1967 / By His Son, Templeton Smith, Sermons in Stone : the Life and Letters of Richard Lesnett Smith and His Helpmate Nellie Lorena Brunt Smith / Compiled By Their Grandson-in-Law Templeton Smith , Engineer Pittsburgh : the story of Julian Kennedy, engineer: His Helpmate Jane Eliza Brenneman and His Kennedy and Truesdale Ancestors in America / By Templeton Smith , The Brenneman Tribe : Being a Brief History of the Brenneman Ancestors of My Grandmother Jane Eliza Brenneman Kennedy and the Linns, Bachmans, and Wentzs with Whom They Married / Edited by Templeton Smith, and Workers in the Vineyard : the Consolidated Lives of Clifford Best Fergus and Annie Luella Smith and Their American Ancestors / By Their Son-in-Law Templeton Smith.
