Robert A. Foley worked with the Allegheny County Assessor's office for 12 years. He then ran for, and was elected, Director of the Poor, in 1931. The Scrapbooks of Robert A. Foley contain materials from a testimonial dinner held in Robert Foley's honor and materials revolving around his election campaigns.

Biography

Robert A. Foley, Sr. worked with the Allegheny County Assessor's office for 12 years. He then ran for, and was elected, Director of the Poor, in 1931. Robert A. Foley claimed no party affiliation during the election, although he ran in the Republican party, and called for an annual audit of the Board's finances. In 1935, he ran for the post of Jury Commissioner.

Robert A. Foley was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pa., and lived much of his life in Mt. Lebanon Twp. He was educated in the Duquesne Public Schools and at St. Mary of Mercy School. Foley married Anna M. Rice and together they raised three children: Robert Emmet, Mary Martha, and James. Robert Emmet eventually became an aviator in World War II.

Scope and Content Notes

This collection consists of two scrapbooks. One primarily contains materials for a testimonial dinner held in Robert Foley's honor at the William Penn Hotel. Included are newsclippings and letters of congratulations from a number of ministers, judges, and other public officials.

The second scrapbook revolves around Robert A. Foley's election campaigns for Director of the Poor in 1931 and Jury Commissioner in 1935.

Also included in the collection are aviation photos and awards for Robert Emmet Foley from WWII.
