Abstract
Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Alliance and Bartenders International League of America Local 237 was founded in 1920 and represented cooks, waiters, maids, bellboys, and other workers in Pittsburgh's hotels. In 1947 the name was changed to Hotel and Restaurant Employees and Bartenders International Union Local 237. The local is now known as UNITE HERE Local 57. This collection includes the charter, constitution, and contracts of Local 237.

History
The Waiters and Bartenders National Union was founded in 1891 and affiliated with the American Federation of Labor. The name was changed in 1898 to Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Alliance and Bartenders International League of America. Local 237 was founded in 1920 and represented cooks, waiters, maids, bellboys, and other workers in Pittsburgh's hotels. In 1947, the name was changed again to Hotel and Restaurant Employees and Bartenders International Union. The union developed into UNITE HERE, which represents hospitality, airport, laundry, food service, gaming, and textile workers in the United States and Canada. The Pittsburgh chapter is now Local 57.
Scope and Content Notes
This collection contains constitutions of the Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Alliance, Allegheny County Labor Council, and the Hotel & Restaurant Employees and Bartenders International Union. Also present are ritual books from the Hotel & Restaurant Employees and Bartenders International Union, as well as Local 237's original charter with the Hotel and Restaurant Employees International Alliance. A contract between Hotel & Restaurant Employees International Alliance, Local Union No. 237 and the Pittsburgh Hotels Association is also included.
