The North Area Environmental Council is a non-profit and citizen-led conservation organization based in northern Allegheny County that was first organized in 1969. The mission of the North Area Environmental Council is to bring matters of land use planning, conservation and safe, sustainable communities to the attention of area residents, encouraging participation to achieve the goals. Originally affiliated with the YWCA (1969-1982), this organization helped to clean up rivers, sponsored walks, picnics, and workshops, planted trees, stopped pesticide spraying, created and maintained trails, sold seedlings, held recycling drives, and presented their concerns to area officials. At the present time (2011), the North Area Environmental Council continues to serve the Pittsburgh area by hosting photography contests, acquiring land for conservation, performing assessment reports, and drafting conservation plans, among other volunteer-led initiatives.
