William J. Gaughan began employment at the United States Steel Homestead Works in 1947 as a laborer at open hearth furnace number four. He worked turns for two years at Homestead before obtaining his degree at Duquesne University. A year before his graduation, Gaughan became an observer in the metallurgical department.
Mr. Gaughan gained extensive management experience in the metallurgical division before becoming a Senior Designer of Operations Planning and Control in 1967. This group developed operations-oriented computer systems. He held this position until retirement in 1983.
Mr. Gaughan became interested in the history of the Homestead Works as a management trainee in the 1950s, when he heard a lecture on the 1892 Homestead Steel Strike. He began to make an extensive effort to preserve the history of steel in Homestead by collecting photographs and other items of historical significance.
The William J. Gaughan Collection consists of records of the Carnegie Steel Company / U.S. Steel Corporation, but the majority of the material in this collection specifically relates to activities at the Homestead Works. The records date from the early years of the mill (1887) to the closing of the Homestead Works Plant in 1988 and include plant operational floor plans and architectural drawings of plant buildings and machinery, company publications, reports, internal memoranda, negatives, photographic prints, and motion picture film.

Scope and Content Notes
This series contains a number of secondary sources about the history of Carnegie Steel Company and its Edgar Thomson, Duquesne, and Homestead plants. These sources include articles, academic papers, biographies, dissertations, and timelines describing the evolution of Pittsburgh's steel industry, leaders such as Andrew Carnegie and Charles Schwab, notable events like the Homestead Strike of 1892, and the chronology of ownership of the Homestead Works. This series also contains programs and memorabilia from public tours of the Homestead and Edgar Thomson Works. These tours focused on the history of the plants and the history of the steel making processes. This series also includes a United States Steel Gold bond and information regarding the Irvin Case looked into by the Truman Committee Investigation. The General History series also includes a quantity of primary source material from the early years of The Carnegie Steel Company such as correspondence, annual reports, check rolls, safety regulation booklets, and production statistics. Later material includes agreements between Carnegie Steel / U.S. Steel and unions (1934-1977), a warning to management about "Summer Work-In" student agitators (1960s), and various memorabilia dating from the World War II era until the 1980s.
An addition of materials were made to this collection and added on to this series.
