History

The Planned Parenthood Center of Pittsburgh, Inc. was established in 1930 as the Birth Control League of Allegheny County and was an indirect successor to the earlier associations, The Birth Control League of Western Pennsylvania and the Allegheny County Birth Control League. The goals of the Birth Control League of Allegheny County as identified in the 1930 Directory of Community Services in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County were:

To develop and organize on sound eugenic and medical principles an interest in and knowledge of birth control throughout the Pittsburgh district. To clarify the law that physicians may give contraceptive information to married persons. To encourage the establishment of a Maternal Health Center for the conservation of maternal health, the furtherance of child welfare and the preservation of home. To cooperate with the state federation and the national organization in furthering their program.

In 1942 the organization changed its name from the Birth Control League of Allegheny County to the Planned Parenthood Center of Pittsburgh. In the 1950 Directory of Community Services in Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, the organization was identified as the Planned Parenthood Committee and Clinic of Pittsburgh, Inc. (formally Maternal Health Center). In 1986, the organization was identified as Planned Parenthood Center of Pittsburgh, Inc. The organization is now Planned Parenthood of Western Pennsylvania,Inc.
