History

The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was a fraternal organization comprised of men who fought for the Union during the Civil War. The G.A.R. was founded by Benjamin F. Stephenson, an army surgeon, in Decatur, Ill., on April 6, 1866. The society was created to strengthen fellowship among men who had fought to preserve the Union, to honor those killed in the war, to provide care for their dependents, and to uphold the Constitution of the United States.

Membership was open to honorably discharged soldiers, sailors, or marines of the Union armed forces who served between April 12, 1861, and April 9, 1865. The Grand Army reached its peak in membership (more than 400,000) in 1890. The last member died in 1955, and the organization was dissolved in 1956. For a time it was a powerful political influence, aligning itself closely with Republican policy. After the organization was dissolved, the records went to the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., and the badges, flags, and official seal to the Smithsonian Institution.

The society founded soldiers' homes, and was active in relief work and pension legislation. The G.A.R. started the celebration of Memorial Day in the North by a general order issued by John A. Logan. The Woman's Relief Corps began as an auxiliary to the G.A.R.
