Abstract
Russell Franks received his formal education from the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, VA, earning his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering. He lived a distinguishing life serving as Chief Metallurgist for Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories in Niagra, New York. During his career he developed several patents in his area of expertise and was also chief of the Super Alloys branch of the Steele Division of the War Production Board.

Biography

Born in 1897, Russell Franks was educated in Virginia and in his 78 years accomplished many projects of great value and research in the area of metallurgy. In this collection there are several diaries documenting his work that is interesting to see the progress of a project taking place. Rising to theposition of Chief Metallurgist for Union Carbide, Franks career included a plethora of patents to his name. He also participated and contributed heavily to the war effort duringWWII with the production of metal items. He died in 1975.

This collection includes one full box of diaries dating from (1930-1959) relating to Russell Franks' work in metallurgy for Union Carbide and Carbon Research Laboratories, Niagara Falls, NY, the Super Alloys Branch,War Production Board (World War II),and the Electro Metallurgical Co., PGH., Pa. Also includes student notebooks and examinations while at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, Blacksburg, VA.
