Serb National Federation Lodge 67, Beaver Falls, Pa. Records, 1929-1968, AIS.1979.18, Archives & Special Collections, University of Pittsburgh Library System
Prior to the founding of the first Serbian Federation, Serbian immigrants organized their own independent ethnic lodges and joined the "Russian Orthodox Federation."
The following delegates attended the Convention of the Russian Orthodox Federation on May 14, 1901: Adam Maravich from McKeesport, Sava and Petar Hajdin from the South Side, Mile Kasar from Butler Street, Pittsburgh and Simo Lapcevich of Export, Pennsylvania. These five delegates saw that it would be beneficial for the Serbian immigrants to have their own Federation for their own "comfort." A group of Serbs met in McKeesport after the Russian Convention and founded the first Serbian Federation on June 15, 1901, under the name, "Serbian Orthodox Federation-Srbobran." Sava M. Hajdin was elected as the first president. In 1929, Srbobran-Sloga and Savez Sloboda merged into the Serb National Federation and was chartered on September 21. The Serb National Federation built new churches for the Serbian Orthodox Church, which became their greatest achievement.
The collection contains a charter, minute and dues books, and an embossing stamp. The minute book is in Serbian until about 1949 and in English circa 1950-1968. Minutes contain information regarding monthly meetings, including financial information and notations of new members, benefits, and correspondence from other organizations, chiefly Serbian clubs or churches. The dues book contains monthly records of dues paid by members with their corresponding birth dates. The names listed in the dues book are in Cyrillic script until approximately 1951. The embossing stamp contains the seal of the lodge.
