Scope and Content Notes

This collection contains 103 items, most of which are petitions to run a tavern or dining establishment between 1854 and 1872 in Indiana County. Each petition gives the name and residence of an individual requesting license for operating a tavern, restaurant, or eating house. The number of rooms in the house to be the site of the operation is given. The petitions often bear signatures of residents who favor the license, though some are remonstrances against granting a license. The petitions are accompanied by bonds and, in some instances, by receipts. Petitions for the period 1854-1864 are handwritten documents; petitions for the period 1865-1872 are signed printed forms. The petitions are arranged chronologically. The collection inventory located in Folder 1 provides an alphabetical list of the names of petitioners.
