The Leafs were a prominent family in Beaver County, Pennsylvania in the latter half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th. The collection includes correspondence, blueprints, personal items, diaries, appointment books pertaining to the lives of members of the Leaf family.

History
The Leafs were a prominent family who lived in Beaver County, PA during the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries. William Leaf (1809-1880), an engineer, immigrated to the United States from England in the 1830's and became an American citizen in 1838. His son, James Pinney Leaf (1866-1949), attended Ohio Northern University), where he earned a civil engineering degree in 1887. He worked as the chief engineer for the Borough of Rochester and Beaver County and owned an architecture company. James Pinney Leaf served in the US Army Corps of Engineers. during WW I, and remained in the reserves afterwards. It appears that he retired with the rank of major. He married Lilian Newton Leaf and had two children, Harriet and William. William Leaf also became and engineer and joined the Army Corps of Engineers and taught at West Point.
Scope and Content Notes
The records in the Leaf family collection cover the time period 1830-1950. The records include their activities in the military and around the Pittsburgh area. The collection contains correspondences, diaries and day planners, manuscripts of proposals and scholarly works, newsclippings, blueprints for various projects, and items from organizations in which the Leafs were involved.
The Leaf family papers are divided into 5 series: Correspondence of the Conservation Association of Shenango and Beaver Valley, the general Leaf family papers, projects of James P. Leaf, surveys of James P. Leaf, and the papers of James P. Leaf.
