History

United Electrical, Radio, and Machine Workers of America (UE) Local 506 represents workers at the General Electric (GE) plant in Erie, Pennsylvania. The local was founded in 1937 and was the last major GE plant to be organized. Local 506 often found itself at the forefront of UE activities, being one of the first locals to begin picketing during the 1945 strike and having its members, such as local president John Nelson, declared Communists in the early stages of McCarthyism. Throughout all of the red-baiting and strikes against GE, Local 506 is still active today as part of the UE Eastern Region.
