After the defeat of Germany, Stalin honored his pledge to American and British allies and the sent the Red Army into Manchuria to attack the Japanese Kwantung Army. Soviet representatives were on board the American battleship Missouri to witness the official surrender of the Japanese on September 2, 1945.
