Description
In the center, an eagle takes flight, holding the shepherd boy Ganymede in its beak and a open-mouthed (barking ? biting?) dog in its talons. At left, a man raises his arms to his head, perhaps in dismay, to aid the child being abducted or to strike the bird. Behind him is a damaged figure that Salet suggests is a woman. At right, a grotesque figure (a devil?) uses its hands to stretch its mouth. Most scholars believe the subject is the classical theme, the abduction of Ganymede, described by Virgil in the Aeneid V, 255-7) Salet: Number 12- Location: South side of nave. South side of first arcade pillar form the west Alternate search terms (See text above for synonyms): demon, bird; Romanesque; Somewhat restored
