Description
Classical theme: Education of Achilles (?) In the center of the front face of the capital is a large mass of foliage which appears to be a stylized tree. To the left, a figure (Achilles?) stands behind a Centaur. It places its hand on the elbow of the Centaur as it draws a bow, aiming at a large bird on the right side of the capital which perches on the central "tree". The front hoofs of the Centaur are raised, and its hair streams behind it (indicating motion?) Though the bird's body faces to the right, its head and beak turn back to the left, and it appears to be pecking at the tree or at an object in it. Salet links this image to the story in Images by Plilostrate of Lemnos. Salet: Number 3 Location: South aisle of nave, North side of pilaster; Romanesque; Good
