Gothic; The Mary Magdalen WindowDelaporte no. 5, Deremble-Manhes no. 46Panel 7. Funeral of LazarusDelaporte suggests that Panels 6 and 7 taken together show the funeral of Lazarus. This panel shows the funeral service. The shrouded body of Lazarus lies in a coffin which is parallel to the plane of the panel. At left behind the coffin are three grieving figures (two men and a woman?) To the right stands a bishop wearing a camelaucum – the white cone-shaped precursor of the mitre. The bishop (Maximin?) appears to be sprinkling the body with water from a rod with a cloth on the end- this is the moment of aspersion during the funeral service. To the extreme right is a tonsured cleric holding an open book in front of him so that the bishop can read it- he holds the bishop’s crosier. (Compare with the funeral of St Sylvester- Sylvester window- panel 31) The bishop and cleric are anachronistic. The source of this story is John 11:1-46.; The St. Mary Magdalen Window
