Description
Gothic; The Charlemagne WindowDelaporte no. 38, Deremble-Manhes no. 7Panel 20: Baudoin tends the dying Roland Between trees, Baudouin (haloed, kite-shaped shield hanging on his back) hands a square object to Roland (haloed) who lies on the ground on his kite-shaped shield, holding his sword and gesturing to Baudouin.Baudoin is Roland's companion who in the Pseudo-Turpin version of the story went on an unsuccessful search for water for the dying Roland. The square object is generally thought to be a helmet in which Baudoin hoped to carry the water. Lejeune and Stiennon think Baudouin's gesture indicates that he did find water, as in the Chanson de Roland where there is water in the valley; Maines is skeptical on this point. Vincent of Beauvais' account (mid-thirteenth-century) also says that Baudouin did find water.Panels 8-21, depicting Charlemagne's Campaigns in Spain are based on the Historia Karoli Magni et Rotholandi, generally known as the Pseudo-Turpin because the text claims it was composed by Turpin, Archbishop of Reims, an eyewitness to the events narrated; see Meredith-Jones, Maines; The Charlemagne Window
