Description
The hippopotamus accommodations were renovated along with most of the other accommodations starting in the late 1930s. Earlier in the decade, a $4,000 hippopotamus died within one week of another zoo animal raising concerns that the zoo was in dire need of repair. As a result of these incidences, a ten year plan was created and renovations were undertaken. On May 31, 1944 the hippopotamus in this photograph gave birth to baby Memo, named for the Memorial Day holiday on which it was born. The hippopotamus pool closed in 1985. More than 100 years ago, philanthropist Christopher Lyman Magee donated $125,000 for the construction of zoological gardens in Pittsburgh's Highland Park area. On June 14, 1898, the Pittsburgh Zoo opened to the public for the very first time, providing people with a rare glimpse of animals and plants they had never seen before. Fitting zoo paradigms of the time, it was more of an animal menagerie. Through the years, however, the zoo has transformed into a naturalistic habitat and resource for conservation, education and research.
