Description
"The Homestead Works of U.S. Steel. The stacks vent open hearth furnaces. This mill had twelve. No two plumes are the same since each batch may have different alloys added or be at a different stage in the process. All pollute the air. The river just beyond the mill is also polluted as liquid waste is dumped in it. The positive side is that jobs were plentiful at this time-the parking lot is full. They also paid well thanks, in part, to the United Steel Workers union." - C. R.
