Description
Chancellor, 1945-1955. During Rufus H. Fitzgerald’s 1945 to 1955 tenure as chancellor, construction started on 10 new buildings on the Oakland campus. During this time, Jonas Salk’s team at the University’s Virus Research Lab, along with Julius Youngner as senior scientist, developed the polio vaccine that was declared in April 1955 to be “safe, effective, and potent.”
