Description
Principal, 1803-1807. Although the identity of the sitter raises a few doubts, it is considered to be the portrait of James Mountain, appointed principal of the Pittsburgh Academy in 1803. James Mountain studied at Dublin University but left Ireland for America to seek political asylum. He was a lawyer and taught at Canonsburg Academy (now Washington & Jefferson College) before his appointment at the Pittsburgh Academy.
